Licenses

Information about licenses, inspections and trainings for For-Hire chauffeurs and vehicles. Also learn about state legislation for a Transportation Network Company (TNC) vehicle.
Ambulance Service License

Miami-Dade County regulates private ambulance companies and public sector ambulance (municipal 911 fire rescue) services.

For-Hire Transportation

The Passenger Transportation Regulatory Division licenses and regulates taxicabs, limousines, passenger motor carriers, school buses and more.

For-Hire Chauffeur License & Training Program

All for-hire drivers must obtain a chauffeur registration from the County and meet eligibility qualifications.

Jitney Certificate of Transportation

Providers of jitney service must be issued a Passenger Motor Carrier Certificate of Transportation. Drivers must have a for-hire chauffeur registration, and the vehicles must be inspected.

Non-Emergency Transportation Certificate

Providers must have a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity and includes the transportation of persons on stretchers, using wheelchairs, or whose incapacitated and makes it impractical for them to need medical attention en route.

Limousine Service License

Vehicles providing limousine service are required to have a for-hire license. Limousines are not equipped with meters.

Passenger Motor Carrier Certificate

Provides contract, charter, jitney and special operation passenger services.

Special Transportation Service (STS) Certificate

Anyone who is in a contract with the County to perform special transportation services for compensation must obtain a STS Certificate of Transportation.

Taxicab License

Transports no more than eight passengers and provides pre-arranged or street hail service. Must be equipped with a taximeter and the passenger decides on the route and destination.

Private School Bus

Drivers of private school vehicles must have a chauffeur's registration (License) from the Miami-Dade County Passenger Transportation Regulatory Division.

Single-tracking for service improvements and safety

DTPW is actively working on maintaining and upgrading Metrorail’s tracks and guideway to improve safety and reliability for Miami-Dade Transit riders. Single-tracking allows the work to be performed safely on weekends and after 8 p.m. on weekdays.

Our mission is to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation services while building and maintaining the critical infrastructure that supports the growing and vibrant communities of Miami-Dade County.

Our mass transit system includes:

Beyond public transportation, the department plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the county’s transportation infrastructure. DTPW manages and maintains all countywide traffic signals, traffic control signs, street signage, pavement markings, and county- and state-owned street lighting systems to help keep roadways safe and accessible.

The department’s Public Works operations also oversee the construction, operation, and maintenance of movable and fixed bridges, roadway repairs, swales, guardrails, and county road rights-of-way. In addition, DTPW operates and maintains the iconic Rickenbacker and Venetian causeways, ensuring safe and seamless travel for residents and visitors alike.

The department is also committed to protecting the community and environment through management of the County Stormwater Utility, supporting flood prevention efforts, water quality protection, and maintenance of the secondary canal system.

To support responsible development and public safety, DTPW’s Public Works team manages permitting for all work within County rights-of-way and enforces compliance for unpermitted work.
